Who Was Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad?

I Used To Be A Jahmee:

Saalih Ibn Mismaar said, I heard Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad say:

“I used to be a Jahmee, therefore I know their saying, but when I sought hadeeth, I realised that their affair is merely ta’teel (denial of Allaah’s Attributes).”

What Imaam Ahmad Said About Him:

Imaam Ahmad said:

“The first person that we know to have compiled a musnad was Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad.”

Imaam Ahmad also said about him (Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad):

“He was one of the reliable.”

His Refutations:

Al-‘Abbaas Ibn Mus’ab said:

“Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad wrote books in refutation of (the views of) Abo Haneefah, and he refuted (the views of) Muhammad Ibn Hasan, and he wrote thirteen (13) books in refutation of the Jahmiyyah…”

His ‘Aqeedah (& A Refutation Of The Ash’ariyyah):

At-Tirmidhee said, I heard Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad (d. 228) say:

“Whoever makes tashbeeh (resemblance) of Allaah to his creation has committed kufr (disbelief). And whoever denies what Allaah has described himself with has also committed kufr. Indeed, all that Allaah has described himself with, or what His Messenger has described Him with – then there is notashbeeh in it at all.”

Ar-Ramaadee said, ‘I asked Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad about the saying of Allah the Most High:

“And He is with you, wheresoever you are.” [57:4]

And he said,

“Its meaning is not that not any slight or hidden thing remains hidden from His knowledge. Do you not see His saying:

“Have you not seen that Allah knows whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth? There is no Najwa (secret counsel) of three, but He is their fourth, nor of five but He is their sixth (with His Knowledge), not of less than that or more, but He is with them (with His Knowledge) wheresoever they may be; and afterwards on the Day of Resurrection, He will inform them of what they did. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything.” [58:7]”

Those He Narrates From, And Those Who Narrate From Him:

Those who he narrated from include the likes of: Fudayl Ibn ‘Iyaad,  Sufyaan Ibn ‘Uyaynah, Aboo Daawood. He saught knowledge from many scholars from Makkah, Madeenah, ‘Iraaq, Shaam, Yemen, Egypt and Khurasaan.

Those who narrate from him (Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad) include the likes of: Imaam Bukhaaree, Aboo Daawood, At-Tirmidhee, Yayha Ibn Ma’een, Aboo Haatim, Ad-Daarimee amongst others.

His Trial, Death & Will:

Aboo Bakr At-Tarasoosee said:

“Nu’aym Ibn Hammaad was held in the trial (al-mihnah) in the year 233H or 234H, and they threw him into prison, and he died in the year 239H.

He left instructions that he should be buried in his chains (Allaahu akbar!), and he said, ‘I am one who will contend (with the perpetrators on the Day of Judgement).”

Author of various works, he was born in the year… and died in 229H.

Niftawaih said:

“He died in the year 229H and he was chained up in prison due to his refusal to declare that the Quraan is created. So he was dragged in his chains and thrown into a hole, and he was not shrouded, nor was he prayed over. This was done to him by the companion of Ibn Abee Duwaad (i.e, Al-Mu’tasim).”
