Is There A Need For Bid’ah In The Deen?

‘Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Zayd related that the Jews said to Salmaan Al-Faarse, “Your Prophet teaches you everything, even how to relieve yourselves.” So Salmaan said, “Certainly! He forbade us from facing the qibla whilst doing so…” [Saheeh Muslim]

Aboo Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allaah said, “When I order you with something, then do as much of it as you can, and when I forbid you from something, then avoid it.” [Bukhaaree & Muslim]

Abu Dharr (radiallaahu-anhu) said: “The Messenger (sallallaahu-alahi-wasallam) did not even leave a bird flapping its wings in the sky except that he gave us knowledge regarding it.” [At-Tabarani in ‘Mu’jam al-Kabir’]

The Messenger of Allaah (saw) said, “I am leaving you two things and you will never go astray as long as you hold fast onto them. The Book of Allaah and my Sunnah.” [Al-Haakim – Saheeh]

Hudhayfah Ibn Al-Yamaan said, “Every act of worship that the Companions of the Messenger did not do, do not do them.” [Aboo Daawood – Saheeh]

Ibn Mas’ood said, “Imitate and follow (the Messenger of Allaah) and do not do bid’ah, for what you have been commanded is enough for you.” Ad-Daarimee – Saheeh]

Is it not reasonable to say that if they chose to be so careful in sticking to what they had ben taught by the Messenger (saw) we shuld be even more so?

The Messenger (sallallaahu-alaihi-wasallam) said as is recorded by Ibn Khuzaimah in his Saheeh about the perfection and comprehensiveness of his Guidance: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul. I have not left a single thing which brings you closer to Paradise and distances you from Hellfire except that I have commanded you with it and I have not left a single thing which brings you closer to Hellfire and distances you from Hellfire except that I have prohibited you from it.“[Ibn khuzaymah and ahmad]

In Conclusion:

The Prophet (saw) said, “He amongst you that would survive after me would see great differences. So hold fast to my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs, adhere to it and cling to it tightly and beware of innovations for every innovation os a bid’ah and every bid’ah is a misguidance (and every misguidance is in hell).” [Aboo Daawood, Tirmidhee and Ibn maajah]
