How To Approach the Quraan And Sunnah, By Shaykh Mashhoor
Shaykh Mashhoor states:
We mentioned that the Quraan, when there can be a number of possible aspects (regarding some issues), is not utilised a a proof except after the sunnah judges over all the possible aspects. If a hadeeth has a number of possible aspects (over some issues) the understanding of the Salaf judges over all the possible aspects via detailed explanation with the scholars.
It should not bypass anyone that this basis is an established pillar and an original foundation which is linked to the Two Testimonies of Faith (shahaadatayn).
As when a Muslim enters Islaam and says, “I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah“, which means none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, and that “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah” means none has the right to be followed except Allaah’s Messenger (saw).
(So) whoever takes desire, intellect, opinion, taste, politics, a shaykh, an Imaam, or a madhhab and obeys all that these instruct him to do and considers his statement as something which neither needs to be assessed for its accuracy nor requiring any proof – then this is throwing doubt on “and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allaah.“
There is a beautiful statement from Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim in his oustanding book Madaarij Us-Saalikeen (Stages Of The Travellers) wherein he says:
“Whoever obtains an authentic hadeeth from Allaah’s Messenger (saw) if he wants to turn away from it let him know that the Prophet (saw) is the one who is addressing you.”
If a clear authentic hadeeth reaches you then it is a must for you to submit to it. Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn taymiyyah also stated with beautiful words within Majmoo’ Al-Fataawaa, vol., p.346:
“Those people who have the most right to be the Firqat An-Naajiyah (The Saved Sect) are Ahlul Hadeeth Wa’s Sunnah who follow none to whom they have partisanship towards except Allaah’s Messenger (saw). They are the most knowledgeable people of his statements and conditions and they are the most able to distinguish between the authentic and the unauthentic…
They do not support any statement and make it a principle of their deen, or of their speech, if it is not verified by what Allaah’s Messenger (saw) has come with. Rather they make that which Allaah’s Messenger (saw) was sent with, from the Book and Hikmah, as the foundation which they believe in and act in accordance with.”
