Raabi’a Al-‘Adwiyyah, The Pious Female Worshipper

Ibn Al-Jawzee said:

“Raabi’a Al-‘Adwiyyah used to pray the whole night, and when dawn came she lay down for a bit and then got up frightened, saying to herself, ‘Sleep in the grave is long.’ ” [“Sincere Counsel To Students Of Sacred Knowledge” by Ibn Al-Jawzee, p.53]

Adh-Dhahabee related by way of Ibn Abee Dunyaa: ‘Abda Bint Abee Shawwaal, who used to serve Raabi’a Al-‘Adwiyyah said:

“Raabi’a Al-‘Adwiyyah used to pray the whole night. When morning would come she would lay down till the sky would turn yellow. I used to hear her say, ‘My soul, how much do you sleep and till what time do you stand up? You might sleep for just a little and never get up until the day of Resurrection.’ “

Raabi’a Al-‘Adwiyyah was a ascetic, God fearing worshipper from Basra. She is said to have lived for 80 years and died in 180H.

Ibn Al-Jawzee said:

“Raabi’a Al-‘Adwiyyah the worshipper used to get up to pray in the beginning of the night and say:

‘The lover has stood up for her hope,
And her heart is about to fly away from joy.’

When the night was over she would say: “No! It has been taken away!” and she would recite:

‘The darkness is gone with its intimacy and concord,
If only the night and its intimacy would come again.’ “

[Al-Muthish, p.211]

Adh-Dhahabee said:

“Aboo Sa’eed Ibn Al-Arabee said, ‘As for Raabi’a Al-‘Adwiyyah, a people have learned much wisdom from her. Sufyaan, Shu’ba and others have related things about her.’ ” [Siyar A’laam An-Nubulaa, 1/232]

  1. as-salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu

could you please mention the book for the first quote by adh-dhahabee? the references are given in brackets for the other three, is it from one of them?

  2. Baarak Allahu feek yaa akhi ! Keep up the good work. May Allah bless your efforts, Amiin

  3. Umm Hamza al Andalousya Says:

As salamu alaycum wa raghmatulahi wa barakatuhu, was not this female sufi?

    • Wa ‘alaykum as-salaam wa rahmatUllaahi wa barakaatuh,

She was the daughter is Al-Hasan Al-Basree and many unauthentic things have been attributed to her. A bit like what has happened to Shaykh ‘Abdul Qaadir Jilaani. As far as I am aware, she was not a “soofee”.

  4. saabiqoon0inshaallaah Says:

salam alykum i heard the same thing and am reading this post and thinking…ok its the AuthenticBase?? whats going on SubhanaAllah i am doing this so called Islamic studies unit as a mere elective and i thought its just an elective its not gonna harm like you know i am not studying from them just need the Cps..but SubhanaAllah it does affect! now in this unit which is called UNDERSTANDING ISLAM and MUSLIM Societies…they taked about Raabi’a Al-’Adwiyyah as a sufi saint who was the teacher of many sufi saints and Awuthubillah what they attributed to her was….horrible not only kuffr and shirk but as well as obscinity! and i am not suprised at all that they will do such things. Allaahuma Sallim Sallim!

barakallahu feekum for this post and all your informative post may Allah reward you a great reward.

    • The state of Raabi’a Al-’Adwiyyah is the sam as ‘Abdul Qaadir Jilaani. The Sufis claim they are upon Soofiyyah but the haqq is quite different. If I’m not mistaken Raabi’a was the daughter of Al-Hasan Al-Basree, so it sems quite strange (though not impossible) that such a giant would have such a deviant daughter.
