The Ruling On He Who Says The Qurān Is Created

The ‘aqīdah of Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jamā’ah is that the Qurān is the speech of Allāh and that it is uncreated. But what is the ruling on the one who claims it is created? Below I shall present some quotes from our Salaf in this regard:

1) Sufyān Ath-Thawrī said, “The Qurān is the speech of Allāh (azza wa jall) and he who says that it is created then he is a kāfir, and he who doubts in his kufr then he is a kāfir.” [Abdullāh Ibn Al-Imām Ahmad in Kitāb As-Sunnaah, 20]

The likes of this statement has also been narrated from Abū Khuthaymah as is found in Sharh Usūl Iqtiqād Ahl As-Sunnah Wal-Jamā’ah, 265/2 the famous book of Al-Lālikāī.

2) Abū Bakr Ibn Ayyāsh Al-Muqri’ (died 194h) the trustworthy worshipper, was asked about he who says the Qurān is created so he said “A kāfir, and he who does not say that he is kāfir then he is also a kāfir.” Its chain is authentic and is found in As-Sunnah of Al-Lālikāī.

3) Ibn Hajr said in At-Tahthīb [303/2]: From Dāwūd Ibn Al-Hasan Al-Bayhaqī: It has reached me that Al-Halwānī* said, “I do not make takfīr of he who hesistates with regards to the Qurān.” Dāwūd said: So I asked Salmah Ibn Shabīb (died 247h) about Al-Halwānī so he said: “He is to be thrown in Al-Hush. He who does not bear witness to the kufr of a kāfir then he is kāfir.” Salmah Ibn Shabīb An-Naysābūrī (died 247h) was the Muhaddith of the people of Makkah.

Khatīb Al-Baghdādī also mentioned this in Tārīkh Al-Baghdād.

*Al-Halwānī is Abū Muhammad Al-Halwānī Al-Husayn ibn ‘Alī Ibn Muhammad Al-Hathli Al-Khilāl.

4) Abū Zara’ah ‘UbaydAllāh Ibn Abdil Karīm Ar-Rāzi (died 264h) said, “Whoever claimed that the Qurān is created then he is a disbeliever in Allāh Al-‘Athīm, a kufr that takes one out of the millah, and he who doubts in his kufr from those that understand then he is also kāfir.”

Abū Hātim Muhammad Ibn Idrīs Ar-Rāzi (died 277h) said exactly the same. Al-Lālikāī narrated all of it in As-Sunnah [2/176)]

5) Imām Ahmad in his reply about the Qurān said, “So it is the speech of Allāh not created, and he who says ‘created’ is a kāfir in Allāh Al-‘Athīm and he who does not make takfeer of him is also kāfir.” [Abū Ya’la in Tabaqāt Al-Hanābilah, 315/1. From Masrud Ibn Masurhad Al-Basrāwī]

Preoccupying Oneself With The Books Of The Scholars Over The Book Of Allaah

A man once went to ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab and said, “O Leader of the Believers, when we conquered Al-Madaain, we found a book that contained in it beautiful speech.

‘Umar asked him, “Was that speech from the Book of Allaah?

The man replied, “No.”

Then ‘Umar asked someone to hand him a stick, after which he proceeded to beat the man, and all the while he (ra) was reciting the saying of Allaah: “Alif-Laam-Ra. These are the Verses of the Clear Book. Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an in order that you may understand. We relate unto you (Muhammad) the best of stories through Our Revelations unto you, of this Qur’an. And before this (i.e. before the coming of Divine Inspiration to you), you were among those who knew nothing about it (the Qur’an).” [12:1-3]

‘Umar then said, “Verily, what destroyed those who came before you was the fact that they took themselves to the books of their scholars and priests, while they abandoned the Torah and the Injeel (Gospel). And they continued to do that until the Torah and the Injeel became obliterated, and the knowledge that they contained went away.

Words of Sh. ‘Abdullaah ‘Azzaam Regarding “Fee Dhilaal Al-Quraan”

“Whoever wishes to understand it (the Quraan) clearly as it is, as if he is receiving the Quraan as it was revealed, and to take part in the battle that it is fighting – the battle that it fought the first time around – he must read “Fee Dhilaal Al-Quraan” (by Sayyid Qutb). Whoever does not read Sayyid Qutb’s tafseer in Fee Dhilaal Al-Quraan will not be able to grasp the depths of this battle, for many reasons.

From them is the fact that the man who wrote this book was relaying to the people these events from the midst of the conflict, and from the depths of the battlefield. He wrote these words while he was watching the hangman’s noose being tightened in front of his eyes. So, he wrote them while he was free of all fears, and free of all the burdens of the dunyaa – no wife, no job, no children, no connection to the burdens that pull one to this earth.

He wrote them while he was bidding the dunyaa farewell, and everyone who reads the tafseer of Al-Baqarah, Aal ‘Imraan, An-Nisaa, Al-Maa’idah, Al-A’raaf and walks with them – in the second printing onwards – will realize that the one who wrote these words is not from the people of this world. Rather, he is bidding this world farewell with these words, and is giving it a departure wave with these words.

Because of this, many people read books, read explanations of the Quraan, read the words of Ibn Katheer, At-Tabaree, and other than them, and they are never able – and I am saying this to you as a professor of Sharee’ah, and I know more than you, and I understand this issue more than you do – they are unable to understand the Quraan as it was revealed, nor are they able to partake in the battle for which Allaah revealed it; not just in the era of the Messenger of Allaah (saw), but in every era, and in every place.

This Quraan is the Book of Allaah that was revealed to fight a battle against the enemies of Allaah, “… and strive against them with it a great struggle…” [25:52]

And it is a must for the people to understand the Book of Allaah, why it was revealed, and with whom these texts are dealing with. And some people think that these texts fought a battle, played their role, and that it is no longer possible to utilize this way of looking at things, or to move forward with these rules to fight the battle of today, which is as if it were the same battle that was fought by the Messenger of Allaah (saw).

So, I advise you and myself to read “Fee Dhilaal Al-Quraan”.

Quotes From Ibn Taymiyyah

Ibn Taymiyyah said:

“As for fighting those who invite to innovations, then they are fought to protect the people from their harm, as in the case of war – an adversary may be engaged even though it is not because they are disbelievers. So not everyone whom we are ordered to fight is fought because of his apostasy.” [Majmoo’ Al-Fataawaa, 23/342]

Ibn Taymiyyah said:

“It is no among the conditions of Imaamate (of salaah) that the followers know the creed of their Imaam, nor that they question him by asking, “What is your creed?” Rather he is to pray behind the one whose case he does not know, as is.” [Majmoo’ Al-Fataawaa, 23/351]

Ibn Taymiyyah said:

“The one who manifests innovation or wickedness is not to be appointed as an Imaam (for salaah) for the Muslims, for he deserves to be punished until he repents.” [Majmoo’ Al-Fataawaa, 23/351]

Ibn Taymiyyah said:

“That which Ahlu Sunnah agree upon is that the Quraan is the revealed uncreated speech of Allaah and that the Quraan which the people recite is the word of Allaah recited by people with their voices. So the words are the words of Allaah, an the voice is the voice of the reciter.” [Majmoo’ Al-Fataawaa, 23/361]

Tafseer Books Written By Our Salaf

Rufai Ibn Mihraan (d. 91) transmitted a lengthy book of commentary on the Quraan from Ubay Ibn Ka’b. [Adh-Dhahabee, Al-Tafseer Wal-Mufassiroon, 1/115]

Al-Dahhaak Ibn Muzaahim (40 – 105H) had a commentary on the Quraan. [Fihrist, 34]

Mujahid compiled a commentary on the Quraan which was copied out by many scholars. [Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, ‘Ilal, 1/44]

Rufaaf Ibn Mihraan (10BH – 90AH) wrote a commentary on the Quraan. [Al-Qaadhi Iyyaad, Sharh Al-Shifaa, 1/175]

Sa’eed Ibn Jubair Al-Asdi (46 – 95) compiled a commentary on the Quraan and used to write the hadeeth he heard from Ibn ‘Abbaas and Ibn Umar. [Ibn Hajr, Tahdheeb, 7/199]

Qataadah Ibn Di’aamah Al-Sassoosee (61 – 117) compiled a commentary on the Quraan. [Ibn Sa’d, Tabaqaat, 7/33]

‘Abdul-Maalik Ibn ‘Abdul-Azeez Ibn Juraij (80-150) had a book titled “Kitaab Al-Tafseer”. [Al-Khateeb Al-Baghdaadee, Taareekh Baghdaad, 8/237]

Daawood Ibn Abee Hind (75-139) wrote a commentary on the Quraan. [Fihrist, 33]

Al-Husain Ibn Waaqid Al-Marwazee (90 – 159) compiled a commentary on the Quraan. [Fihrist, 34]

Al-Hushaim Ibn Basheer Al-Waasitee (104-183) compiled many books, of them “Kitaab At-Tafseer”. [Fihrist, 228]

Ibraheem Ibn Tahmaan (100-163) compiled many books, of which was “Kitaab At-Tafseer”. [Fihrist, 228]

Isma’eel Ibn Ibraheem Al-Asadee (110-193) compiled a book titled “Kitaab At-Tafseer” among others. [Fihrist, 227]

Muqattil Ibn Sulaimaan (90-150) compiled many books as well as a commentary on the Quraan. [Ibn Hajr, Tahdheeb, 10/279]

Sa’eed Ibn Abee ‘Arubah (80 – 156) wrote many books. Aong them was a commentary on the Quraan. Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, ‘Ilal, 166]

Sa’eed Ibn Basheer Al-Azdi (79-168) was an author of many books, and compiled a commentary on the Quraan as well. [Adh-Dhahabee, Meezaan Al-‘Itidaal, 2/130]

Saalim Ibn ‘Ajlaan AlAftaas (70 – 132) had a commentary on the Quraan which the scholars praised. [Al-Azdee, Taareekh Al-Mawsil, 120]

Shaybaan Ibn ‘Abdul-Rahmaan Al-Tamimi (90 – 164) transmitted from Al-Hasan Al-Basree and had a commentary on the Quraan. [Ibn Sa’d, Tabaqaat, 7/79]

Za’eedah Ibn Qudaamah (100 – 160) was a compiler of many books. Among them was “Kitaab At-Tafseer”. Fihrist, 226]

‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee In The Trial Of The Quraan

Ibn ‘Ammaar Al-Mawsilee said in his Taareekh:

” ‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee said to me, ‘What prevents you from declaring the Jahmiyyah to be disbelievers?‘ And at the beginning I had not used to declare them to be disbelievers. Then when ‘Alee (Ibn Al-Madeenee) consented to their saying in the trial (concerning the Quraan) I wrote to him reminding him of his saying to me, and I reminded him of Allaah.

Then later a man informed me about him that he had wept when he had read my letter. Then I later saw him and he said to me, ‘There is nothing in my heart of what I said with my tongue, (i.e. in response to the trial concerning the Quraan) and I responded because I feared that I whould be killed, and you are aware f my weakness, which is such that if I had been ashed a single time I would have died.‘ “

Al-Marroodhee said:

I heard a man from the people of the army say to Aboo ‘Abdullaah (Ahmad Ibn Hanbal);

“(‘Alee) Ibn Al-Madeenee sends the greeting of salaam to you.”

So he (Ahmad Ibn Hanbal) remained silent. So I said to Aboo ‘Abdulaah (Ahmad Ibn Hanbal):

” ‘Abbaas Al-‘Anbaree said to me that ‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee mentioned a person and spoke against him, so ‘Abbaas Al-‘Anbaree said to ‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee, ‘They will not accept your saying, rather they will only accept from Ahmad Ibn Hanbal.‘ So ‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee said, ‘Ahmad was able to withstand lashes, whereas I could not withstand it.‘ “

Ibn ‘Ammaar also said, “He (‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee) did not consent out of belief in that, but merely through fear.

Muhammad Ibn ‘Uthmaan said, “I heard ‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee say two months before he died, ‘The Quraan is the speech of Allaah, uncreated, and whoever says that it is created is a disbeliever.

Aboo Zur’ah abandoned narrating from ‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee due to what occured from him during the trial, but Aboo Haatim used to narrate from him since ‘Alee Ibn Al-Madeenee disassociated himself from what he had done (i.e. under stress). Aboo Haatim said, “ ‘Alee (Ibn Al-Madeenee) was a sign amongst he people with regards to knowledge of hadeeth and hidden defects of transmission (‘ilal).

Adh-Dhahabee said, “Some people report from ‘Abdullaah Ibn Ahmad (Ibn Hanbal) that his father (Imaam Ahmad) withheld from narrating from ‘Alee Ibn Al-Madenee, but I do not see that. Rather ahaadeeth are reported from him in his Musnad, and there are a great number of ahaadeeth from him in Saheeh Bukhaaree.
