A Forgotten Sunnah: Walking Barefooted

Al-Hasan bin ‘Alee narrated to us, Yazeed bin Haarun narrated to us, Al- Jurayri informed us on Abdillah bin Buraydah: That a man from the Companions of the Prophet -sallahu ‘alayhi wasallam- traveled to Fadaalah bin ‘Ubayd -may Allah be pleased with him- while he was in Egypt.

So he arrived at him and said: I have not come to you to visit you. But you and I have heard a hadeeth from the Messenger of Allah -sallahu ‘alayhi wasallam- and I hope that you have some knowledge from Him (the Prophet -sallahu ‘alayhi wasallam-) about it.

He said: And what is it?

He said: Such and such. (Then) he said: Why do I see you dishoveled while you are the Leader of the land?

He said: The Messenger of Allah -sallahu ‘alayhi wasallam- has forbidden us from indulging too much in the comforts of life.

He said: Why don’t I see any shoes on you?

He said: The Prophet -sallahu ‘alayhi wasallam- used to command us to go barefooted sometimes.

[Collected in Abu Daawud (3629) and Sheikh Al-Albaani has authenticated it in As-Silsilah As-Saheehah (502)]

Fawaa’id: Sheikh Al-Albaani -may Allah have mercy upon him- says in As-Silsilah As-Saheehah:

….This (hadeeth) is a reminder about an unknown sunnah in the minds of many of the people and it is the sunnah of Walking without shoes -sometimes-. It is a sunnah that many people are ignorant of save a few. And if some would try and implement this the people would see this as a strange affair. Perhaps they would even criticize them for this act of theirs. [Until he said]… So imitate your loved one and your Prophet -sallahu ‘alayhi wasallam- and walkbarefooted sometimes and shoed at others….. As this has been authenticated on the Prophet -sallahu ‘alayhi wasallam- that He walked barefooted occasionally! Except that majority of the time He -sallahu ‘alayhi wasallam- was shoed.

By Shaykh Al-Albaani

The Authentic Ahaadeeth

1) On the Authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, the Messenger of Allaah –‏صلى الله عليه وسلم – said:

Do not turn your homes into graves, Indeed the Shaytaan flees from a house that Suratul Baqarah is read in.
[Collected by Muslim]

2) On the Authority of bu Mas’ood – may Allaah be pleased with him – the Prophet of Allaah –‏صلى الله عليه وسلم – said:

The last two Ayaat of Suratul Baqarah will suffice whoever reads them in a night.

Virtues Of Chapters In The Qur’aan – Surat Al Faatihah

By Shaykh Al-Albaani

The Authentic Ahaadeeth:

1) On the authority of ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with them, who said:

“While Jibreel was sitting with the Messenger of Allaah – صلى الله عليه وسلم – he heard a creaking from above, so he raised his head and said:
That is a gate in the heavens that opened today, it had never been opened before until today.’ An angel descended from it, he [Jibreel] said: ‘This is an angel that descended to Earth, he never descended before until today.’ He [the angel] extended the Salaam and said: ‘Rejoice for two lights that have been given to you, no Messenger was given them before you; the Faatihah (opening) of the Book, and the concluding verses of Surat al Baqarah, you will not read a word from them, except that you will be given it.’”

[Collected by Muslim, Saheeh at Targheeb wat Tarheeb: 1456 – al Albaanee.]

2) The Messenger of Allaah – صلى الله عليه وسلم – said:

The likes of it was not revealed in the Tawraat, or the Injeel, or the Zaboor or in the Furqaan. It is ‘the seven oft repeated’ and the Great Qur-aan that I was given.
[Collected by both al Bukhaaree and Muslim.]

3) The Messenger of Allaah – صلى الله عليه وسلم – stated:

“Allaah the Elevated said: ‘I have split the Salaat between Me and my servant into two parts, and My servant will receive what he asked for.
When the servant says {All praise is due to the Lord of the worlds} Allaah would say: ‘My servant has exalted me.

When he says: {The Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy} Allaah would say: ‘My servant has praised Me.

When he says: {the Only Owner of the day of Deen} Allaah would say: ‘My servant has glorified Me.

When he says: {You alone do we worship, and from You alone do we seek aid} Allaah would say: ‘This is between Me and My slave, and for My slave is what he asks.

When he says: {Guide us to the straight path, The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger , nor of those who went astray.} Allaah would say: ‘That is for My servant and My servant shall get what he asks for.’”

[Collected by Muslim ‘Saheeh at Targheeb wat Tarheeb’ :1455 – al Albaanee.]

Signs of a Good End
Shaykh Muhammad Nasir-ud-Deen al-Albani

The Prophet, salaallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said, A Muslim who is killed in a battle is a martyr, (dying in) plague is artyrdom, a woman who dies while delivering a baby is a martyr. [Ahmad, Daarimee, Tiyaalisee, authenticated by Al-Albaanee]

The Prophet, salaallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said, The martyrs are seven, other than the one who is killed in the Way of Allaah, ta`aalaa:
– One who dies of plague,
– one who drowns,
– one who dies of pleurisy,
– one who dies of stomach ache,
– one who dies due to burning
– one who dies under a demolition (by accident)
– a woman who dies with a baby in her womb

[Maalik, Aboo Dawood, An-Nasaaee, Ibn Maajah, Ibn Hibban, Haakim, Ahmad. Authenticated by al-Albaanee]

The Prophet, salaallaahu `alayhi wa sallam said:

– “Getting killed in the Path of Allaah ta`aalaa is martyrdom,
– [death in] confinement during childbirth is martyrdom,
– [death by] getting burned [by accident] is martyrdom,
– [death by] drowning [by accident] is martyrdom,
– [death due to] tuberculosis is martyrdom,
– [death due to] stomach ache is martyrdom
.”
[Tabaraanee, Ahmad, authenticated by al-Albaanee]

The Intention For The Prayer

The Intention For The Prayer

Taken from the ‘Original Sifat as-Salah’

By Ash-Shaykh, Al-Muhadith, Muhammad Nasir- Deen Al-Albaani

Translated by: Abbas Abu Yahya

At-Takbeer

Then the Messenger  sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam – used to begin the prayer by saying: ‘Allaahu Akbar.’

In this is an indication that the Messenger  sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam –never used to say anything before the Takbeer, like pronouncing the Niyyah (intention).

Like some people say: ‘I have intended to pray for Allaah Ta’ala so many Rakat facing the Qiblah……..’ to the end of what is well-known amongst many of the people!

All of that is Bida’; it has no foundation in the Sunnah.  This is something which the scholars are in agreement about.

It was not narrated on anyone of the Companions, nor did one of the Tabieen regard it as appropriate. Nor did any of the fourMujtahid Imaams.  But rather it was mentioned by some of the companions of Imaam Shafi’ee, when he said about the Hajj:

‘It is not necessary for the one who enters into the state of Ihraamand makes his intention with his heart, that he mentions it with his tongue.  Not like the prayer which is not correct except by an utterance.’

Ar-Raafi’ee said in ‘Sharh al-Wajeez’ (3/263):

‘The majority – i.e. From the scholars of the Shafi’eeyah – said: that Imaam Shafi’ee – may Allaah have mercy on him- did not intend by his statement the pronunciation of the intention with an utterance, rather he intended pronouncing the Takbeer; since the prayer is begun by this, and in the Hajj a person can become Muhrim without pronouncing the intention.’ It is similarly mentioned in ‘al-Majmoo’ 3/276-277

Indeed he has indicated this in ‘al-Muhadhib’ by saying: ‘And from amongst our companions there are those who say: Make an intention with the heart, and an utterance with the tongue. This is nothing since the Niyyah is the intent with the heart.’
